Are you training for something? Is it going well?? Can you teach me how to clip in? Just kidding. Not really.
Well I believe I’m like 9 weeks out from the Philly Triathlon and I haven’t started training for it yet. I’m far from a star triathlete so I should really have been following a 12 week training program… oops! The bad news is that I leave for my trip next Friday and training besides running will be pretty much nonexistent. I always plan very active vacations where we pretty much walk everywhere and I also have some hikes planned as well and will try to squeeze in running a few times…. But no biking or swimming. I suppose there is a chance for a leisurely bike ride but nothing on training level. As for as swimming… it’s just a hassle to bring swim equipment. I know I could pack my bathing suit, swim cap, and goggles and take up minimal room but then I have to worry about packing a towel (takes up a lot of space), finding a gym (I hate driving or walking around a I don’t know alone), and of course the expense of paying to go to a gym for an hour. I instead would rather enjoy the outdoors, maybe try a unique fitness class (surf yoga!), and not bail on my husband to work out. Also I don’t want to stress out about working out while on vacation… a few runs, a couple hikes, and lots of walking is definitely enough fitness for me while I'm away. So basically when I get back I will have 6 weeks to prepare for an Olympic Triathlon…. I don’t feel this is adequate but my half marathon training for the Love Run in March was pretty minimal and I seemed to do okay. I’m just going to try to rely on having a good fitness base and endurance and see how I do without months of training. Hopefully I can get into a grove after the Philly Tri and manage to try for another tri later in the summer. I’ve mentioned several times I don’t care about a PR… plus in triathlons every course is soooo different most of the time, so I feel like you can really only compare performance on courses… and I’ve never raced the same course twice. This is also disappointing because I invested in an amazing new bike at the beginning of April and here is it almost May and I haven’t ridden it yet!!!! The biggest reason I haven’t ridden it yet is because the pedals are clipless… meaning you have to clip in, something I’ve never done before….and something I’m slightly terrified of doing. My one attempt to try this week ended in me on the ground with a serious hip bruise, days out from the Broad Street Run, awesome (super excited to race Broad Street and although my training hasn't been the best since I did the Love Run a month ago I started with a strong distance base). After that I decided I’m going to wait until after the race to attempt this whole clipping in thing again. My luck… I’ll master it next week, go on vacation, come back and have to start at square one…. Ahhh. Well if I don’t master it I’m just going to transition to regular pedals for one more tri and dedicate time to learning it after the the Philly Tri. UGH. So basically this was a post about me complaining and being inadequately prepared for a race I was soooo excited to do for the first time this year and in my current town. This sucks. I just figured I would share my frustrations because I know that some other athletes might be going through the same thing and be feeling down… so just a reminder… sometimes your surprise yourself! And if nothingless it’s a lesson learned about your abilities and a training race in preparation for something bigger and better!

I had such a hard time clipping in at first! I would get so anxious about it that I was googling how to do it before I had to haha.
