1)cereal is one of my favorite foods, especially the unhealthy kind
2) I don't completely avoid GMO's
As a Registered Dietitian, these two statements might be frowned upon... but let me defend myself. First of all yes I love the sugary yummy cereal but I know if I buy them I will eat half a box in one day. So I rarely buy the sugar delicious cereals like Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Lucky Charms, Captain Crunch, Cocoa Pebbles to name a few. I stick to Chex, Rice Krispies, and Cheerios. I think it's awesome that Cheerios is going GMO free. However I don't personally eat completely GMO free... for now the research shows there is no greater risk than conventional foods. Also there is no distinction between the two required in the United States. A GMO is a product that has had it's DNA manipulated to make changes using genetic engineering. Corn, soybean, canola, and papaya are a few of the most common considered GMOS. While I rarely eat these foods, I don't avoid them. But the choice is yours!
Original Cheerios will now be labeled as “Not Made With Genetically Modified Ingredients,” although that it is not an official certification. The labels will also note that trace amounts of GMO ingredients could be present due to the manufacturing process, said Mike Siemienas, a company spokesman.
Apple Cinnamon, Multi-Grain and other Cheerio flavors will not be made GMO, as they will still include corn as an ingredient.
